For many, the local pub or coffee shop is the modern-day town square. It is where people go to decompress after a hard shift, celebrate a promotion, or lament a loss. If we limit our spiritual lives to church buildings, we miss out on the rich, messy conversations happening every night over a pint or a latte.
Breaking Down the Secular Divide
We often draw a sharp line between the sacred and the secular, but that line is largely of our own making. A conversation about fatherhood at a bar can be just as holy as a Sunday school lesson. When we enter these spaces with a heart for listening, we find that people are often more open to the deep questions of life than they are in a pew.
Incarnational Living
To be missional is to be incarnational—to take on the life of the community. This doesn't mean compromising your values, but it does mean being willing to be where people are most comfortable. Presence in these common spaces is a declaration that God cares about every square inch of our neighborhoods.
